Spring Turkey Hunting In TexasLooking for a long-beard this season?  It’ll all be about location, location, location. Hens and juveniles will be abundant in most areas, but mature gobblers will be plentiful primarily on lands that have been lightly hunted in recent years, according to Jason Hardin, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department upland game bird program leader.

Tips: Even though wild turkeys possess amazing eyesight and keen hearing, their brain is the size of a peanut, so they are not really that smart.  There’s at least one story of a tom being accidentally called in by a noisy gate hinge.  They are, however, very wary as just about everything in the woods is out to kill them

Tips…Portable pop-up style blinds work great for turkey hunting.  You should also consider using hay bales, farm equipment, cattle feeders, etc…; anything the turkeys are used to seeing, as a blind to get you near enough for a shot.  As turkey hunters, we encounter spring gobblers both with and without hens.  Concentrate on those without hens when possible.

Tips:   Remember, spring turkeys are all about courtship so interrupt and answer any hen that is with that gobbler.  If your aggressive calling can get a hen worked up enough to come looking for a fight, the gobbler will more than likely follow her, and you’ll get a crack at him.

Tips:   Always set up at the same elevation as, or slightly higher than a bird you are calling, as it’s very difficult to get a gobbler to come downhill.

Tips:   Set up to bushwhack a gobbler as he comes off the roost, but only get as close as you can quietly get.  Also in this scenario, call very little to a gobbler while he’s still roosted

There are few thrills in hunting that can compare to that of bringing a mature tom turkey to the call. The sight and sounds of that big bird strutting and gobbling makes every hair on my body stand straight up with excitement. Even after having had scores of turkey gobblers in my face, it is an adrenaline rush that just never seems to dull.
